The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program: What You Need to Know

Written by: Beulah Joy Lejano

What is the International Baccalaureate?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an independent non-profit educational foundation which offers four highly respected programs of international education namely:

  • The Career-related Programme (CP) is designed for students aged 16-19
  • The Diploma Programme in the final two years of the secondary school
  • The Middle Years Programme for students aged 11 to 16
  • The Primary Years Programme for students aged 3 to 12

What is its purpose?

Founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) aims to create and maintain high standards of teaching to optimize student achievement. The IB programs ensure the proper development of a student’s intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills necessary to thrive and excel in a rapidly globalizing world.

Why is it different from traditional academic curricula?

The IB program promotes unique academic rigor and puts emphasis on students’ personal development to produce knowledgeable, confident, and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.

  • International

The IB program promotes the concept of international-mindedness by equipping students with the conscious awareness and deeper appreciation of their own culture which in turn can help them understand events at a broader context and recognize its impact not only in their local and national setting but in a global perspective.

  • Independent

One of the unique qualities of the IB program is its freedom from profiteering organizations and income-related businesses as well as political and commercial interests. It works side by side with national educational systems, and is highly respected in more than 140 countries worldwide.

Furthermore, the PYP and MYP have outstanding flexibility to incorporate itself within the local and national curriculum requirements while the DP enjoys a comparable respect alongside other courses offered in international academic institutions.

  • Research-based

The IB program is continuously evolving and undergoing strict reviews on a regular basis to ensure its programs and curricula provide the best possible international education to students.

Each program is a balanced and curated result of careful and detailed pedagogical studies and research of innovative and creative education experts from many different cultures globally.

  • Widely-recognized

The depth and breadth of the rigorous work that IB programs are known for do not go unnoticed by universities and future employers. Most highly reputable academic institutions and companies around the world believe that IB students are well-prepared for work at the university level and beyond.
